Frequently asked questions
Why does MicDrop need my location?
Location is the whole game: drops are pinned to real places, and the app uses your position to show what's nearby and to unlock a drop when you're physically close to it. If you opt in, your approximate location is also used to find interesting places near you worth telling a story about. You can revoke location access any time in iOS Settings, but the map and unlocking won't work without it. We never sell location data — see the Privacy Policy.
How does unlocking work? Why can't I play a drop from home?
Each drop has an unlock radius — typically a few dozen metres around its pin. When your GPS position falls inside that radius, the drop unlocks and you can listen (once you've heard a drop, it stays unlocked for you). This is deliberate: hearing a story where it happened is the point of MicDrop. If a drop won't unlock even though you're standing right at the pin, GPS drift is the usual culprit — moving a few metres or waiting a moment usually fixes it.
How do I delete my account and data?
In the app: Profile → Delete account & data. Deletion is permanent and removes your account, your activity, and your drops. You can also email us at the address above and we'll delete it for you.
How do I report a drop or block someone?
Open the drop and use the Report option; reported content may be hidden automatically pending review. You can also block a creator from their drop, which hides all of their content from you. For anything urgent — defamation, copyright, or content about you — email us with the drop's title and location and we'll review it promptly.
What are "seeded" stories? Who are the narrators?
Seeded stories are short character-voiced tales created by MicDrop from public Wikipedia articles about real places near you — they're clearly labelled in the app and link back to their Wikipedia source (CC BY-SA 4.0). The narrators are fictional characters voiced with AI text-to-speech. The stories are for general interest and may contain inaccuracies.
Do I need to create an account with an email and password?
No. MicDrop works with an anonymous account out of the box — no name, email, or password needed. You can optionally sign in with Apple, Google, or email to keep your drops and badges across devices, and add a display name if you want credit for your drops.
